Rest is resistance: Free yourself from grind culture and reclaim your life
by Tricia Hersey
For the summer holidays… For the park… For the beach…
For the garden, the balcony, the couch…
Rest Everywhere.
Rest For All.
For those of us who have not read it, now is the time to read it. For those of us who have read it, now is the` time to read it again!
Half political manifesto and half meditation, half a soft and tender memoir and half a philosophical theory, this is a book that will, one way or another, touch your soul.
Tricia Hersey offers us a solution to the suffering and the violence that run our world. And a simple solution it is: Rest! She makes a very compelling argument to support her suggestion. In her own words:
“ If we are not resting we will not make it. I need us to make it. We must thrive. I know our collective rest will liberate us and shift consciousness. A rest movement. A spiritual movement. A political movement rooted in care and justice.[…] Rest is a meticulous love practice…”
In this book she gives a very insightful historical interpretation of how we collectively came to deny our inherent right to rest and she generously offers to us, from her own life and work experience, proof of how rest can heal us and inspire us. She also gives us instructions on how to practice rest in our daily lives.
Rest Is Resistance has helped me understand rest in a whole different way and my life has been better for it. Frequently I open the book and read a few pages to remind myself not to forget to rest. On my wall I have printed an encouraging quote from the book, in big bold letters:
“REST!
DREAM!
RESIST!
IMAGINE!”
